20th October - Beccs U17's KENT 7's - CUP Runners-Up

The U17s narrowly lost to Cranbrook 17-14 in the dying seconds of the Kent 7’s Cup Final today. Leading 14 – 12 with possession Beccs had a penalty awarded against them with 10 seconds to go which enabled the turnover and the opportunity for Cranbrook to score the winning try. Nonetheless the boys played some great 7’s.

Beccs topped our tough group having won all the round Robin matches – Beating Aylesford 15 – 0, Westcombe Park 33-7 and then Canterbury 22-5. This pitched us up against Whitstable in the quarters who we clinically put to the sword beating them 33 – 0. Next up were Folkestone, last years winners, our defence held up superbly with some great tackles by Bobby Coles and Harvey Jewell. We continued to play some very good structured 7’s scoring three excellent tries. Folkestone whilst they came back at us hard down the slope in the second half we managed to contain them eventually winning 19- 14.

The Cup Final match was against last years runners up was always going to be nip and tuck game. Cranbrook like us had played good 7’s throughout the day with very similar score lines to show for it.

A great day for the lads, at at a tournament where we were certainly one of the stand out 7’s teams. A lot of the teams opted to try and play 15 man style rugby which just did not work. We stuck to our game plan and structure which paid off handsomely as time and time again we stretched teams across the park waiting for the gaps to appear which they did. The training had paid off and we would all like to thank Hookey for all the help he gave us.
