22nd February 2006 - BRDG Floodlight 10's Festival

Beccs Academy did the club proud last night and beat Westcombe Park in the Plate Final of the inaugural Bromley Rugby Development Groups Floodlight 10s Festival at Beckenham RFC on a freezing Wednesday night. All of the Beccs players from the U18’s and U17’s Academy section put in committed performances and showed the greater desire to win against a strong 'combe side.

The evening was the Finals night after the Prelims two weeks earlier and pitted O.Dunstonians v Orpington and Beckenham v Bexley playing off for the minor placings with both OD's and Beckenham wining their matches convincingly. Then came Beccs vs WP for the Plate Final and the level and standard stepped up a gear in pace and quality of rugby.

Both sides were up for it and having met only a few days earlier on Sunday in a closely fought Kent League match, they knew that it was going to be another close encounter. The first 5 minutes was stalemate with both sides playing between the 22M lines and neither side able to break through, with 'combe enjoying more of the possession. Beccs slowly started to gain the territorial advantage and eventually broke the deadlock when Gbemi Fisher broke through a tackle at outside centre to canter through to score 20M wide of the posts. The conversion was missed, but Beccs were 5-0 up.

From the restart, Michael O'Hehir collected and started on an arcing run in field, gathering pace he blasted through three tackles and lined up the last player who made a fantastic tackle. This lifted the crowd and the players in their belief that Beccs could take 'combe on. Half time 5-0 to Becs.

Gareth Robinson took a brilliant catch at the start of the second half and made good yardage to set the tone and standard for the rest of the game. Once again, no quarter was given, and possession was going to be vital with most of the play continuing in the middle of the park. With the ball spinning wide on a number of occasions, Neil Page eventually got a break and broke wide after 5 minutes from his own 10M line, a desperate tackle from ‘combe prevented the try as he was clear, but the ball was still in play and Beccs support was at hand. A quick recycle and passing back in-filed released Gbemi to scoot round under the posts for a fine try. Robinson converted to take Beccs 12-0 up.

Westcombe Park were not about to give up and continued to exert pressure gaining more of the possession as the half continued. They got their rewards with 3 minutes to go and scored an unconverted try to bring the score back to 12-5.

Tensions rose as ‘combe started to believe that they could potentially pull the game back. However, the Beccs supporters (great support and thanks for coming down) needn’t have worried as the lads were not about to let this match slip away. This was typified by Simon Spier who put in a wonderful dump tackle on a ‘combe player and a turnover with a minute to go. Final score 12-5 to Beccs and another trophy for the Academy – two in four days. Well done lads.

In the final Bromley beat O.Elthamians 14-10 in another fast and furious game to win the Cup.
