Beccehamians vs Sittingbourne - 4 October 2003
Kent 1 (Won 26-13)
Beccehamians gave their best performance so far this season to record a home win against Sittingbourne, previously unbeaten this season.
Right from kick off Beccs came out fighting. The strength and skill of the pack worked the ball up into the visitors half early on. Working well as a team, the ball was shipped out to he backs who were able to keep the momentum going, enabling Dave Adkins to score in the corner. Beccs kept the pressure up at the re-start, and some great lines of running from winger Xavier Darroch brought them close to another try, but Sittingbourne defended well and managed to hold off the Beccs attack.
Beccs increased their lead though with two successful penalties by Martin Hennessy, the first of several for the fly half. Sittingbourne were not going to be beaten easily though and came back with some good phases of play which broke through the Beccs defence. A successful penalty and a disallowed try gave the visitors the momentum they needed and just before half time they crashed over the line for a try which was then converted. Beccs managed to regain some of the lost advantage with another successful penalty before the whistle blew.
Beccs dominated in the second half, showing their superior fitness and strength. Geoff Brown once again stood out along with Flanker Sean Jones for their great work around the park and in set pieces. In the scrums the home side once again took control and drove Sittingbourne off the ball on several occasions. All credit to the Sittingbourne defence that Beccs were unable to break through for a score despite the impressive play. The last scores of the match came from penalties on both sides with the Becc's No. 10, Martin Hennessy taking his total to seven successful kicks for the match.
Beccehamians have a lot to be proud of after one of their best performances yet, but are aware that they must maintain the momentum if they are to continue their wining ways. The next league match is away at Cranbrooke on the 11 October 2003.
