1st Dec 2007 - London SE4 League Bromley 25 - Beccehamian 3
Last week it was mentioned Beccs needed to capitalise on every opportunity which could prove costly if not taken. Those chances were on offer against Bromley who converted the few they had to run out comfortable winners and continue Beccs poor away form this season.
Playing down the slope and with the wind in the first half Beccs had the lions’ share of possession and territory, dominating the scrum and line-out. Sweeting with his new “plimsole-like” boots and his front row colleagues Robinson & Appleton together with whole pack putting pressure on every scrum with several taken against the head driving Bromley off their own ball, Harding & Robinson “nicking” line-out ball and Spurgeon, Chitty and Baxter first to every breakdown.
Bromley were certainly up for this game and their excellent defence coupled with some loose play, dropped and forced passes from Beccs allowed Bromley to reach half-time 12-3 ahead when Beccs could so easily have been 3 trys ahead. Bromley scored by an interception pass picked up and well finished by the speedy full back from half way and on one of a few visits into Beccs half a drive over by the pack against a solitary Jim Bryan penalty.
Playing down the slope in the 2nd half Bromley ran in 2 more trys, one very fortuitous 50/50 bounce gratefully collected and finished by the full back, and a penalty. Many referring decision’s were debateable to say the least, for instance how can you catch and drive 7 yards over the gain line from a line out only to be told defending team going forward and opposition Scrum? Hmmm, very debatable.
Make no mistake Beccs wanted to win this game and had great desire to do so. It was only a very stubborn and determined Bromley side on the day that prevented Beccs continuing their recent good form.
Beccs have a fortnight to regroup and assess the injury list before their last league fixture of the year at home to Horsham on Saturday 15th December.
