9th Feb 2008 - London SE4 League
Beccehamian 7 - Charlton Park 15

On a glorious sunny afternoon Charlton Park avenged their earlier season last minute defeat beating Beccs by two trys to one.

Playing up the slope in the 1st half Beccs started very brightly putting together several well worked phases of play and taking the game to their visitors. Young centre Chris Bevan running hard and breaking the gain line and making some good off loads out of the tackle.

Bs opened the scoring on just 5 mins. A clever crossfield kick by Jim Bryan just inside Beccs half was collected by Sam Painter who drew in two defenders and threw a brilliant inside 15 yard looping pass to fullback Neil Paige who still with 30 yards to go turned on the burners and comfortably beat the cover defence to score by the posts, converted by Bryan, 7-0.

CP had woken up and immediately went on the offensive. The game was being played at a quick pace and Beccs gave away a few needless penalties. One of which the CP skipper and fullback duly from 30 yards out almost in front for 3 points narrowing the gap to 7-3. The remainder of the half brought opportunities for both sides who were creating gaps by some hard running and clever off-loads out of the tackle, but neither side could execute the final pass or phase of play needed to score.

Once again Chitty was the Bs main ball carrier and yard maker who had a great game as did the solid front row of Hayler.S, Sweeting & Appleton. The Beccs defence and tackle count was pretty good all day but inevitably the few that were missed cost them badly. CP scored their first try on 55mins started with a well worked backs move which broke the midfield defence 30 yards out, some good off loads out of the tackle put their scrum half in for a try, missed conversion, 7-8.

Bs man of the match fullback Neil Paige made two fine last man tackles, he also caught all kicks directed at him safely and together with his blistering speed caused all sorts of problems for the CP defence giving Beccs some welcome territory with some chips back over the defence.

CP put the game out of reach with just 2 mins remaining. A kick over the midfield was gathered by Beccs cover defence but the clearance was charged down into the greatful arms of the CP 10 now playing at 13 who scored under the posts, converted, 15-7.

As with the previous three games against CP over the past few seasons they have all been closely contested, physically hard and played fairly. Today was no different, Beccs played well but CP as a team just played a little better and probably just deserved the win.

This third defeat in a row consigns Beccs to 5th in the table. They must regroup quickly and shake off the knocks before hosting top of the table Bognor to Sparrows Den next Saturday 15th February.
