16th Feb 2008 - London SE4 League Beccehamian 17 - Bognor 55
Beccs started the first 10 minutes both very physically and keen to get a much needed win by causing an upset against the run away leaders of the league. Some hard and straight running and willingness to put bodies on the line made a great start for the home side.
The catalyst in change of fortunes was an injury to the Bognor scrum half who was substituted. Beccs used the time to talk about continuing the good start whilst Bognor must have been relieved to gather themselves together. The short break certainly benefited Bognor as the next 5 minutes produced 3 very soft trys and the remainder of the half was all one way traffic by a well drilled and effective Bognor side. This effectively finalised the result at half time, Beccs were down 0-34 and playing up the slope in the 2nd half.
The 2nd half Beccs woke up and played some gutsy rugby managing what no other side has done this year by scoring 3 trys against Bognor through acting captain Nick Hayler in a typical bulldozing run from five yards out, Sam Painter in the corner following several phases of play and hands down the back line and an interception following pressure in defence by Tom Peacock who also converted his own try. The closer 2nd half score of 21-17 accurately reflected the competitive nature of this fixture.
The plus points were a great performance by Michael O’Hehir in a rare outing at number 8 controlling and picking up from the base of the scrum and carrying the ball over the gain line, and young openside flanker Alex Leone’s work rate and determination in the absence of the injured Chitty and Jones respectively.
Bognor certainly deserve to be crowned champions and Beccs wish them all the best for the remainder of the season and in their future in the South West divisions. Beccs have a week off before travelling away to Crowborough on Saturday 1st March.
