September 2003 - Update

Welcome

Welcome back let’s hope that this year will be as successful as last which will be difficult as it was one of the best for a number of years. If you are here for the first time then we extend an extra special welcome and hope you join us on a more regular basis.

First Games & Fixtures

Our first matches are early in the season with a friendly at home on 28th Sept and then we really get going in november with 2 Festivals and an away fixture. Bromley Festival – Oct 12th, Away fixture - Oct 19th (O.Elthamians) and Westcombe Park Festival on 26th Oct – please book the dates in the diary. The Festivals are usually long days and we are normally restricted in numbers per squad. This could affect some of the larger groups and it may not be practically possible to take everyone, despite all of the coaches’ wishes. We will aim to try to get everyone involved at some point in the season in a Festival so please do not feel too disappointed if not initially selected. If you know you can’t make a particular date then please tell your coach so that they can organize players. Attached is the current fixture list for info.

Membership and Players

Membership this year has increased to £40 per family. This increase on is due to increases in costs for insurance, training equipment, entry to Festivals and general running costs. The increase is in line with other clubs in the area and still represents good value for money at less than £1:20/week if you come every week in the season. Membership forms can be gained from the coaches or from Sharon Keate. Thanks Sharon for volunteering to co-ordinate this again this year. Remember two passport size photographs per child if you are new to the club and home and mobile telephone numbers. Registration is also for insurance purposes.

Membership also enables you to apply for International tickets via the club and the Club Secretary (Simon Corcoran). Note this usually has to be done several months in advance of the event, so I think the deadline for the 6 Nations Internationals is by the end of, and you have to pay in advance. Please see notice boards in the clubhouse.

This is World Cup year and bound to generate some extra interest and potential new players so why not bring them down to Beccs, there is no real limit on numbers, the more the merrier, spread the word to anyone you may know, tell them about the club and/or bring them down. There are bound to be some events going on at the club for the various England games, no info available at present, but, keep your eyes on the upstairs notice boards.

Volunteers

We always need your help, all of the coaches at Beccs are volunteers, and they greatly appreciate any assistance provided by parents. We have a new coach for the Under 8’s – Dave Thompson, one of our senior (not in age) players as Tim and Harry will be staying with the U7’s, any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Safety Matters

Please ensure that all of the boys and girls wear gum shields even from a very early age. It is important that they protect both sets of teeth especially the second teeth. One of our players mother is a dentist and she has kindly offered fit gum shields at a discount rate during the first two weekends upstairs in the hall.

All body protection clothing must have an IRB (International Rugby Board) label on it (most do nowadays). Check the label, it means that the clothing has passed IRB safety standards. Studs, molded studded boots are fine, but cleated studs are not acceptable in 99% of cases, check with your coach. All molded boots are acceptable. Any screw in stud must have a kite mark on the stud - therefore virtually all football boots with screw in studs are not legal and need to be replaced with a kite marked stud. This is to meet IRB standards and to protect against cuts and applies at ALL age groups – no exception. Refer to your coach if you need help.

I make the above points as it is stipulated under the Rugby Continuum that all children should be properly equipped and protected for their own and the safety of others.

Club kit (shirts, socks, shorts and training tops etc) can usually be purchased in the Hall / Men’s changing room on most home practices days and is again good value for money. Big thanks to Jackie Spier for continuing to do this and there should be a note on the main notice board when she will be around.

Dates for the Diary

Bit early, but a couple of key dates
  • Saturday 6th December, Mini Parents Party and disco. To be held in the main Hall at our clubhouse again and is the main fund raiser for the Mini section. It is usually a pretty good bash, loads of food and raffle prizes from what I can remember! More details later.
  • The annual Mini tour weekend is after Easter on the 16th - 18th April and will be to Weymouth and the Bournemouth Festival on the Sunday, details to follow shortly from Nigel or your coaches. Reservations with deposit will need to be placed by the end of November.

Codes of Conduct

The RFU supply a code of conduct for players, parents and spectators and I attach a copy for your attention. Beccs is a family orientated club and the enjoyment of the children playing the game is our primary objective.

Have a great and enjoyable season

Regards,

Nigel
