Minis Win 4 Shields and a Plate at Sidcup’s Henry Dowswell Festival
Despite all ages groups being not unsurprisingly grouped in a pool with both Old Elthamians and Beckenham, all teams had a very successful day out in very poor playing conditions.
The surface of the pitches was so poor that the pitch sizes were minimal, in the under 11s and 12s we played on less than a quarter of a pitch compared to the usual half size, which when you are a running team like most of our sides tend to be, it does cramp your style.
Nevertheless Sidcup put on a very good event and it is not their fault that the weather was not so kind. We should aim to participate in it again next year if invited.
The U12s lost to Elthamians 2-0 before going onto beat Beckenham 2-1. That put them in the Shield final against Sidcup the home side, where we duly won 1-0.
The U11s like the under 12s were still asleep when Elthamians beat us 3-1, but a much better performance with lots of boys playing out of position against Beckenham (the eventual cup winners) saw us draw 1-1 when a win was looking highly likely. This put us into the shield final against Thurrock where we dispatched them 4-0 again with several small backs like Marcus and Peter in the second row, leaving Miles (2), Harry and Jordan to score and bring home the Shield.
In the U10s we saw very similar scores to the U12s, however a resounding final win against Sidcup 6-0 brought them home with the Plate.
The U9s lost to Elthamians like the senior age groups, did a fantastic job in beating Beckenham 2-1 but left them too tired to compete effectively in the Plate final which they lost narrowly to Thurrock 2-0.
The U8s did extremely well in they were the only team not to lose to Elthamians where they secured a 5-5 draw. A similar result against Beckenham put them into the Shield final against Colfeians where we sent them packing with a 7-4 victory.
The U7s results are not available, but we do know that boys won the Shield Final, so congratulations to them in their first year of rugby, surely a sign of good things to come.
Well done and congratulations to all Minis. - Nick Brooks
