U14 Kent Sevens Champions!
How good that sounds! The season could not be any better than this!
A tough competition at Ashford on one of the coldest April days - which began at 7.30am with a horrible drive through thick snow down the M20. Luckily, the snow had not reached Ashford so the competition was on.
Our pool games were against Sevenoaks, Sittingbourne, Bromley and Aylesford (who pulled out with the loss of too many players to injury). I could write loads about each game but all of them were characterised by fantastic teamwork, adaptability and some truly awesome passing in true sevens style! The results speak volumes:
Sevenoaks 12 - 14 Beccehamians
Sittingbourne 0 - 21 Beccehamians
Bromley 7 - 21 Beccehamians
So into the quarter finals against Thanet. A team with fresh legs, supplied by all our subs, with the return of a couple of rested ones, saw Beccehamians win 19 - 0. One highlight was a super try from James Chatten, who ran from near the halfway line to score. Are forwards supposed to do that?
The semi finals saw us up against Canterbury, who were determined to avenge their recent defeat in the Kent Cup Final. Every player stood up to the test. Despite an early try by the opposition, the boys did not let their heads go down. They entertained us with incredible display of defensive rugby, all within 2 metres of the Canterbury try line, before getting away to score their first try. Then there was no stopping them! The game ended with a 28 - 7 victory.
The Final - once more up against Sevenoaks, who had got through by virtue of their greater try rate, denying a superb Blackheath side a place in the final. This time it was 7 minutes each way - so hard when legs are exhausted and the snow had reached almost blizzard conditions. Sevenoaks scored the first try and despite their best efforts, the lads could not score one back. A rousing speech from coach Paul Hewitt at half time, lifted the lads and they hit the ground running right from the kick off. Huge tackles and swift passes ensued, with Paul Broadhurst finally releasing Jack Robertson through a gap and over the line. Sevenoaks upped their game but could not get through the Beccs defence. A Sevenoaks scrum won by great forward work from Sam Jeral, James Chatten and Jack Murtagh, saw Paul Broadhurst make a swift pick up and hurtle off towards the line to score.
Game won 14 - 7
A mention to all the try scorers of the day:
Jack Robertson, Charlie Phair, Sam Jeral, Paul Broadhurst, Harry Trype, Jack Robertson, Angus Peters and James Chatten. Paul Broadhurst kicked every one of his 13 conversions, with Angus Peters kicking 2 and Charlie Phair 1 (much to the amusement of his Dad!)
Once again we see club history re-written. No side has ever won a double like this! Even more awesome is the fact that this is the first time this side has played in a sevens competition - last year they missed out due to the Youth Eire Tour. Goes to show how important it is to train a little!
Well done each and every one of you. Robbie and the Pauls are incredibly proud of you all, as are all the parents. I know Robbie would much rather have been with you lads instead of stuck at work ensuring the Olympic Torch was safe! For the moment I have matching cups on each end of my mantelpiece until the new trophy cabinets are up.
