Beccehamians 21 v Chipstead 12
A cold but dry day presented good conditions for a development game against Chipstead, who brought a large squad of players down to Sparrows Den which was good to see.
The idea was to play our newer boys from the off, and one or two who might not normally start. Also to take the opportunity of trying some of the boys in different positions, to give Cliff options in case of absence or injury.
Chipstead started the match with what looked like a strong line up, including one boy who was 6ft and 12 st. With some of our boys trying to get acquainted with their roles we conceded territory, and when their big guy got the ball 10 metres out he was hard to stop. 0-12 at the break.
In the second period Cliff introduced Harvey and Big Matt and what a difference that made, we started carrying the ball and driving forwards. Harvey broke through to get our first points and Matt duly converted, and shortly after this Matt found space on the left wing and ran in from the 22 and followed up with the conversion. These two linked again for our third try this time Harvey scoring under the posts, and Matt converting to make it 3 from 3.
We played a third period without adding to the score, altogether another good win with all players given a run.
MOM- Harvey outstanding and Ray enjoying some freedom and making the tackle of the match on Goliath.
