Sunday 7th November BECCEHAMIANS 10 V Westcombe Park 0 In a hard won game the boys eventually ran out winners 10 – 0. The pitch, which was heavy, dictated the nature of the game which inevitably produced a forward battle. The game as usual against Westcombe was played in a fair,clean and friendly but hard manner . The game started with a number of number of scrums, mauls which produced scrappy ball for the backs and resulted in a number of knock on’s. There were one or two great pick ups by Bobby from the back of the scrums which produced a few memorable runs with Big Alex in support. The scrum held up well with Dominic Leone nicking several balls against the head. Our 1st try by Michael Phillips came from one of the balls taken against the head with the opposition lying deep we were able to transfer the ball quickly down the back line to Michael who produced a scintillating run across field breaking one tackle and then chipping the ball over the Westcombe Park defenders and oustripping them in a dash for the line. Michael O’Flynn unfortunately failed in his attempt for the 2 points. From the kick-off, Westcombe Park came back with some great pick and drives through the heart of the becc’s defence posing a real threat to the Becc’s try line.However stout defence with some great last ditch tackles from Harvey jewel and Dan Webb managed to prevent Westcombe scoring. The ref blew for the 1st half with Beccs leading 5-0. Beccs made a number of substitutions at half time so that each boy got at least half a game. The 2nd half followed the pattern of the 1st half with both sets of players tiring, no mean feat for some of the boys as it was their 3rd game that week. This did not deter the boys and they continued to attack the Westcombe Park line, though the defence stood firm. Most notable in the 10th minute, Jamie Keate produced a great run, picking up the ball from the scrum only to be stopped by a solid Westcombe Park defence. Unfortunately Scott had a recurrence of his rib injury and was taken off. The 2nd try by Becs came in the 15th minute, courtesy of Michael Phillips. This was produced by good work in the backs by Michael Glover, Charlie Jennings and Danny Meehan who produced some great tackles allowing allowing Becc’s to win and secure the ball for Michael to score with one of his blistering runs down the wing. Again Michael O’Flynn unfortunately failed in his attempt for the 2 points due to the tight angle and the heavy underfoot conditions The last quarter of the match led to Beccs being pinned back on their line as Westcombe Park bravely tried to get back in the match. But the Becs produced some great hard tackles to stop them going over. Dan Webb tackled above his weight as well as Harvey Jewell. Your Roving Reporter Alb.
