Sunday 23rd September 2007 Beccehamians 34 - Tonbridge Juddians 3
The first game of the season is always hard and to have opponents of the ability of TJs made it even harder. The scoreline flatters us but says something about our ability to score tries under presure, even if one or two were against the run of play. The game could not have started better for Beccs, Joe Patterson making ground from a clean take at the kick off, Harry Trype making a searing break and Jack Robertson finising off under the posts for the first of his three tries.
Beccs then had trouble getting their hands on the ball as TJs dominated the forward encounters with some strong driving mauls and solid rucks. But good defence kept them out and they fell to another long range try as good hands along the backs put Angus Peters away for his firat try for the club. Harry finsished the scoring to give a first half lead of 17-0.
The second half was much the same with TJs dominating possession but unable to make it count. Slowly the Beccs forwards get themselves into the game and started to build a platform and keep TJs under pressure. Crisp handling in the backs saw another try for Angus and two more for Jack R to seal the win. Joe Patterson was the stand out forward and gave a first class example of loose forward play.
All in all a satisfying win that bodes well for the rest of the season; but one that has identified a number of problems to be ironed out. Some good performances by new boys Angus, James Chatten and George Scott who stepped in at short notice to cover the scrum half slot. Well done to all.
Beccehamian B 0 - Tonbridge Juddians 43
With so many players on our books we then put out an entirely different team who effectively played TJs A team again. Need less to say they could not compete but they kept going and showed a lot of heart. There is clearly a lot to build on and against genuine B opposition they will do well. Many of the team will be playing A team rugby this year and I am grateful to you all for playing in this game. Again some excellent contributions by new boys Tom Davey, Rob Neave and Liam Melville.
