Beccehamian B 5 - 22 O.Gravesendians
A disappointing performance from Beccs in a game they could have won. Having said that, Gravesendians played some good rugby and deserved their win. They were the stronger side, more aggressive at ruck and maul and willing to move the ball wide whenever they could. Their fly half was their most dangerous player and without him they rarely looked like scoring - when he did get the ball, though, his strong running was too powerful for some weak Beccs tackling. That was our main failing throughout, too often allowing the visitors to make ground from promising Beccs attacks. For a short period in the second half Beccs managed to dominate and put Gravesendians under sustained pressure. One or two moves broke down, often from a poor last pass, but eventually Beccs broke through as Josh Hewitt powered over from a short penalty.
There were some performances that stood out. It was good to see Luke Mullett back on the pitch - he will sport his black eye with pride tomorrow!! Chris Chaperlin had a strong game on his club debut and brought some much needed grunt to the game when he came on. George Scott and Will Kemp had good games at half back, despite some loose ball flying from scrums and line-outs. Mark Boyle had some excellent runs and made some of the best tackles of the day. The two or three A players that came on following injury all added a bit of class. In the end it was a reasonable result against an A team but we must start believing in ourselves and playing with more confidence. The next B fixture is against Warlingham on 20 January.
