Sunday 2nd March 2008
Beccehamian 'B' 15 - 24 Westcombe Park

On a glorious Mothers' Day the boys stepped up to the mark today and gave the mums that were present, probably a better gift than a bunch of flowers. They gave them pride and and a sense of achievement that any mother would be proud of. From the very first whistle of the game Beccs were up for a good game and disappoint they didn't. After only seven minutes Chris Chaperlin took hold of the ball from a break down in the WPs half and accelerated towards the line, chased by three of the backs in good support he crossed over to score a great try. Much whooping from the side line parents ensued. A difficult kick from wide which Will was unable to convert. The play continued at quite an awesome pace with good ball being fed out to the backs, but a lack of pace and a close defending back line from WP's slowed down the game for us at this point until Edward Shaw used his size and strength to crash through six or seven players to cross the line a second time for Beccs. The next few minutes up to half time and WP started to realise that they needed to put some fresh legs on the pitch and with five subs spare they swapped around only to pull two break away tries through the middle of the posts with easy conversions.

The second half saw Chris come out to the wing and Tim go into wing forward position. Beccs had some relly great drives with the ball in hand and the likes of Sam O'Donnell and Luke holding on to that ball for dear life. The very large No 4 for WP causing a few to suffer a bit of bruising as he fought hard to get hold of the ball. On the break down we did well to feed the ball back but lost out on many occassions by leaving it open for the WPs to clamber over and recover the ball lying wanting on the ground. At this point WP fed the ball out wide and saw their winger run for our line catching all our backs napping, however the long legs and truly remarkable Jacob Hart sprinted (yes sprinted) after him to take him down 10 metres from the line. Bravo Jacob. A third try was then put in by WP which was unconverted. The next dazzling display was from Ed again taking the ball at the halfway line and busting through a cluster of forwards and most of the back line. All the parents by this point had lost their voices and held their breath as he touched down......... on the 5 metre line. A shocked Ed was convinced, like a lot of us, that he had gone over the line, but hey what the heck, a fine piece of running and nothing at all to be ashamed of as he had already proved his worth and his stamina ( injuring himself only minutes earlier). Lewis shortly after broke through and scored a great try which poor old Will again had to try and convert from the side lines. A final try beckoned for WPs which again went unconverted making the final score 24-15.

Can I say from all the parents today that not one boy can be singled out as being man of the match because like the final of Masterchef, they were all winners and proved to each other that with determination and self belief they knew that today they wouldn't give the opposition a walk over game. Everyone present today should be very proud of their sons and showed that Beccs are a tough side to beat.
