Beccehamians 43 - 0 Tunbridge Wells

Determined to prove they deserve to be Kent champions, Beccs came out of the blocks at top speed against Tunbridge Wells and were 14-0 up within the first five minutes. Admittedly, TWs were missing one or two key players and we had to lend them a prop, but we were short too and Conor Lawrence and Rob Neave both started with Henry Beedle and Will Kemp on the bench. We benefitted by the fixture being switched to our ground due to the weather and the boys made good use of a firm pitch on a dry day.

The forwards set the scene with two early strikes against the head, one of which led to a try in the first minute when Charlie Phair ran through his opposite number to score. With quick ball from ruck and maul and the backs throwing it down the line, it was not long before the second try came, Angus Peters ending a flowing move. Charlie and Angus added another try each before they were removed from the fray. The front row of Jack Murtagh, Jack Gilgunn and Josh Hewitt were impressive all day, dominating the scrums and putting in some hard pick and drives. Jack was rewarded with a try which Murtagh senior insists was from outside the 22! Paul Broadhurst had a strong game at scrum half, putting himself around the pitch and scoring a try to end the half 36-0 up.

We had been expecting TWs to bring a B side as well but it wasn't to be. Fortunately the score line allowed us to bring on our B players and Jack Davis, Sam Clark, Edward Shaw, Sam O'Donnell, Jacob Hart and Chris Chaperlin came on to join Conor, Rob, Henry and Will. All acquitted themselves well although so many changes disrupted the rythym set in the first half. TWs worked themselves back into the game and showed what a good side they are. Their talented half backs started to cause problems and they were unlucky not to score when only a foot in touch prevented them grabbing a try. Beccs were determined to keep a clean sheet and defended well and wrapped up the scoring when Chris Chaperlin made a storming break down the left wing, beat the cover and ran in under the posts. Another satisfying win against a good club - well done all.
