Beccehamians 22 - 5 O.Colfeians

So finally here we were - last game of the season (and what a season!) With only one sub due to holidays and a B fixture, it was 'fingers crossed no one gets injured and if they do they'll have to carry on!'

The boys were determined to make it an unbeaten season and started strongly, with Jack Robertson running in a try within the first couple of minutes. A strong wind prevented the conversion and the boys went back for the re-start. Colfeians came back equally determined, but were constantly under pressure from everyone on the Beccs team. A couple of surging runs from Angus Peters were stopped an arm length from the try line before Jack managed to breech Colfeians powerful defence and score to make it 10 - 0. Charlie Phair and Richard Cartwright put in strong tackles to prevent breakaway tries from the opposition as did those stalwarts of the big tackle, Jack Murtagh and Paul Broadhurst. It would be fair to say that Beccs were not playing their best rugby, but Colfeians were formidable in defence and ended many attempts to break through their lines with strong tackles themselves. One of their players had to come off after one huge tackle which saw his head connect with a Beccs knee as he misjudged slightly and went too low. Just before half time, some swift hands had Sam Jeral storming for the corner flag to make it 15 - 0.

A few words from coach Paul Hewitt and the boys came out in the second half intending to play tighter and more effective rugby, but Colfeians were not in on the plan! They spoiled every effort to break through and fought hard to score themselves. Charlie decided he needed a rest and our 'utility' sub, Ryan Souter, stepped into the centre. There were a few things happening in the rucks that caused the referee some concern but Beccs did not lose their discipline. Colfeians maintained the pressure and stopped several of our running backs with more huge tackles. One on Liam Melville had him retire hurt, with Charlie coming back on at full back. Sustained pressure towards the try line saw us inch forward. A 'King' move from a penalty saw more determined defence from Colfeians but the Beccs forwards kept up the pressure until Josh Hewitt picked up the ball inches from the line where Jack Murtagh had been stopped, to score. The wind dropped enough for a conversion to make it 22 - 0. We were now in the last 5 minutes of the game and Colfeians scrapped for every ball until a missed tackle gifted them a lovely try from the halfway line. Game over 22 - 5

Well done to everyone. It has been a pleasure, albeit sometimes, an 'I can't watch this!' butterflies in the stomach kind of pleasure, because the desire to succeed has been so great, but I would not have missed any of these games for the world. A lot of the parents have said how privileged they have felt seeing these boys pull out all the stops and they deserve all the success that this season has brought them. They have truly grown as players and a team and we are all immensely proud of you all.
