Sunday 29th October

BECCEHAMIANS 75 V CROYDON 5 (Away)

Beccs turned in an awe inspiring display to win this enthralling game. The backs and forwards produced their best performance to date with great interplay. The team was captained by Sam Vernaza. All credit to Croydon who never let up, the boys never let their heads down.

Beccs 1st try came in the eighth minute, scored by Anthony, the 1st of 5 tries following an inspirational performance by the Becc’s flanker. A ruck was formed 5 metres out from Croydon’s line from which Andrew quickly fed good ball out to Anthony who from this range is unstoppable, resulting in a try under the posts. This was converted by Sam.

The 2nd try came in the 14th minute, courtesy of Anthony. From the scrum some 25 metres out, it was picked up by Andrew, who passed it inside to Bobby Coles. He then released Anthony who was in very close support who as he did all day proved that he was to strong to be stopped from 10 metres out. Conversion by Sam.

The 3rd try came in the 21st minute from Croydon’s kick-off, which was sent straight back to Croydon’s 22M line by a superb kick from Jamie Keate. From the resultant line out, the ball was won by Beccs via Sam with Anthony latching onto the pass to score. Converted by Sam

In the 25th Minute, the try of the season so far, by Chris Brown, who produced a match winning performance. He was able to pick up the loose ball, breaking through two tackles to outrun the Croydon’s defence from the 22M line. Sam converted.

In the 28th minute, Bobby produced a typical try, with a superb pickup and run from the 22M line to score under the posts, converted by Sam.

From the kick-off by Croydon, Beccs replied with another try by Bobby. The kick-off was well fielded by Harvey Jewell 20 metres in side the Becc’s half. Having spotted Bobby coming flying up on the outside Harvey off-loaded the ball immediately to allow the Becc’s no 8 to go on a blistering run outpacing every defender that got near him to score in the corner.

From the kick-off a maul was formed and the ball was collected by Jamie who produced one of his jinxing runs through the Croydon’s defence. With James Williams in support, the two produced a great inter-play, which allowed Jamie to run in from 25 metres to score under the posts. Converted by Sam

Michael Glover, even though he did not get on the scorecard produced some excellent runs to open up Croydon’s defence.

The 2nd half started as the 1st with a great try by Andrew Murray. From a scrum 25 metres out, Bobby picked up the ball and passed to Andrew who went through a gap in Croydon’s defence and outpaced the defenders tracking back to touch down. This was not converted

Croydon then scored a well deserved try in the corner which was not converted.

The scrum at this time was solid and pushing Croydon’s scrum back. From one of these drives, Anthony was able to pick up and score from 25 metres out. Sam converted.

Anthony then from a line-out, stole their throw in and drove for the line and score. Converted by Sam.

Michael Phillips then produced a blistering run, to run in a try from the half way line, beating 3 defenders who could not keep up with him. Converted by Sam as the ref blew up for time.

All in all a good performance by Becc’s, however it was definitely a game of two halves. Becc’s in complete contrast to the 1st 30 minutes produced some really scrappy undisciplined play as they failed to maintain their structure in attack. A case of too many people wanting to get on the score-sheet rather than worrying about the game plan. If we had kept our shape and made a couple more right decisions a century was not out of the question, but would have been a harsh result for Croydon, who to their, credit stuck to the task in hand and never let up in their defence despite the odds.
