Sunday 27th November
BECCEHAMIANS 33 V BLACKHEATH 20 (Away)
On a bitterly cold Sunday morning Becc’s beat Blackheath. Despite the cold, it was nigh on perfect playing conditions resulting in some excellent rugby. The game was not won until the last 10 minutes with both sides playing some hard and fast, rugby, despite the fact that both sides were missing players who were away at Kent Trials.
Danny was captain of Becc’s and led from the front as usual hounding down the opposition. The game also saw good performances from the two new boys, Archy at Hooker, and Max at Prop.
Beccs started off really well with a try in the first 5 minutes from the player of the day Michael Glover. From a line out ball, Beccs won it within Blackheath’s 25 metre line, some quick passes along the line allowed Michael to straighten the line and with an excellent swerve broke through 3 tackles to score under the posts. Sam duly made the converted.
In the 16th minute, Blackheath scored a try, but failed to convert.
The next 15 minutes, became a forward battle with neither side giving an inch. Just before half time from sustained pressure by Blackheath, they scored, but failed to convert. The ref blew for half time with the scores at 15-7 to Blackheath.
The second half continued in exactly the same manner as the first, however after 10 minutes Beccs scored from an attack in Beccs own half. A fast ball from a maul allowed Michael Glover to throw out a long miss pass to Michael Phillips who bursting onto the ball at pace was able to run rounded two defenders and score under the posts, allowing Sam an easy conversion.
This took the scores to 15-14 to Blackheath.
Beccs 3rd try came a few minutes later and was scored by Big Alex, who produced a great run from the Blackheath 25 metre line. Yet again the ball was moved swiftly down the line to hit Blackheath out wide, a superbly timed past managed to hit Alex who exploded on to the ball, straightening the line of attack and breaking through two tackles to score under the posts. Sam again converted to leave the scores at 21-15 to Beccs.
Blackheath then replied with a try for them, but was not converted to leave the scores at 21-20 and still 8 minutes to go and all to play for.
Michael Phillips from the kick out by Blackheath, collected the ball and almost scored, but was fouled 5 metres out. The ball was tapped by Michael Glover to Adam Parham who drove low at the Blackheath defence, lined up on the try line. Despite some valiant tackling Adam was to prove too strong and bulldozed them over to score. This was a truly deserved try as Adam had put in a fantastic performance being up there with Michael Glover as one of the players of the match. Due to the tight angle, Sam narrowly missed the conversion, which was a shame as Sam had a near perfect days kicking.
With the scores at 26-20 and time running out for Blackheath, the referee called the last play of the game, and with this Lordy then produced the try of the day. He collected the ball from the kick off by Blackheath from Becc’s 22 metre line and proceeded to run the whole length of the pitch, breaking one tackle and out running the Blackheath defence to score under the posts to huge delight and relief from players and spectators. Sam duly converted. Could Becc’s have discovered a new winger?
The boys played some excellent rugby, in what was a tight physically contested match and one that could have gone either way. In the end the Becc’s strategy to move the ball away from the Blackheath pack won through. Other notable performances were put in by Chris Brown who was carrying an injury for most of the game and Sam who not only kicked superbly but also stole a lot of opposition lineout ball for Becc’s.
From a freezing and delighted roving reporter.
